On the Trail with WHIM Summer 2021 Challenge

Our goal with this challenge was to bring people together, get people outside and active, and to introduce NH’s multiple accessible rail trails to the disability community as an excellent resource for exercise, connecting with nature and peers, and enjoying the natural beauty NH rail trails bring to hikers. This summer, we hosted events on:

  • W.O.W. Rail Trail - Belmont town beach in the Leslie Roberts Recreation Area off of Route 3 in Laconia, NH

  • Londonderry Rail Trail - 4 Symmes Drive (bus station parking lot) in Londonderry, NH

  • Northern Rail Trail @ Potter Place - off of Route 11 in Andover, NH

  • Cotton Valley Rail Trail - Railroad Depot at 15 Railroad Ave in Wolfeboro, NH

  • Winnipesaukee River Trail - Across from Hall Memorial Library at 18 Park Street in Northfield, NH

  • Piscataquog Rail Trail - Parking at West Side Ice Arena at 1 Electric Street in Manchester, NH

  • Rockingham Rail Trail - 105 Depot Road in Candia, NH

7 rail trails hiked          18 WHIM hikers participated          51 rail trail encounters

Summer of WHIM 2021

In addition to all of the trail hiking WHIM friends have been doing for the On the Trail challenge, we've enjoyed a few other events together this summer. Take a look!

  • Kayaking day with New England Healing Sports Association (NEHSA)

  • Afternoon voyage out of Newburyport on the Impossible Dream - THANK YOU to Carol Lavelle and All-Ways Accessible for providing a donation to the boat on behalf of WHIM's adventure!

  • Annual WHIM & NH-USA Hike on the Crotched Mountain Accessible Trails in Greenfield, NH

WHIM Cycling Day with NEP & CMARS

On May 7th 2021, WHIM partnered with Northeast Passage (NEP) and Crotched Mountain Accessible Recreation and Sports (CMARS), adaptive recreation organizations in NH, at the Steeplegate Mall in Concord to bring adaptive cycling to WHIM participants. Most who participated had never tried adaptive cycling, and by the end of the afternoon most, if not all, were hooked! WHIM gives a big thank you to Amanda and Cam from NEP & Kristin, Jeff, and Diane from CMARS for their time and effort in providing participants with equipment and fittings.

A Short, but Enjoyable Summer of WHIM in 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to limit our usual activity-packed summer, but we were still able to get in a couple of events - Seacoast Outing at Rye Harbor State Park and hiking the Crotched Mountain Accessible Trails with NH-United Spinal Association & Crotched Mountain Accessible Recreation and Sports. Thanks to all who participated!
